Why Hire an Architect?
Many clients call us after having first decided on a builder to execute their dream project. This is not the best approach for the following reasons:
- DESIGN: Architects are trained professionals, who can interpret your programmatic needs and desires into realistic and aesthetic construction plans. A good design will be relevant to a family's lifestyle. Interior spaces should be warm, intimate, inviting and disciplined, as well as energy efficient.
- KNOWLEDGE: In addition to the rigorous academic and apprenticeship requirements to become an Architect, licensed Architects are required to take continuing education classes each year. Theses requirements are even more stringent for AIA members. This ensures that the Architect remains current on materials, trends, and building code regulations.
- QUALITY: Quality is our number one programmatic goal, working within your defined budgets and needs. A builder is looking to maximize profits, often at the expense of quality. Because your Architect is involved in your Project, from conception through Certificate of Occupancy, the homeowner is protected, and the most appropriate materials will be specified for the project, ensuring maximum utility to the homeowner, and resale value down the road.
- ENERGY: All the homes we design are extremely energy efficient, not just as a selling gimmick, but as a programmatic goal that is inherent in our design philosophy.
- MATERIALS: We specify only the finest materials that are available today. Examples are clear cedar for siding, clear mahogany decking, insulated glass, ceramic tiles, oak, marble, slate stone, etc. as dictated by our clients' preferences, as well as good design and good taste.
- COMPETITIVE PRICING: Even the best builder needs to be "kept honest" through competitive bidding practices. Your Architect will put together a "Bid Package" consisting of the Plans and Specifications ("blueprints") and a detailed multi-page bid form. He will then obtain competitive bids from pre-screened contractors, ensuring that they are complete and include all aspects of your project, from ground breaking through painting.
- COMPLEX CODES AND REGULATIONS: Permit and approval processes vary greatly from state to state and town to town. Architectural Review Boards, zoning issues, stormwater management and drainage issues - your Architect has the experience and knowledge to guide you through the complex process of turning your vision into a reality.
